      <image:title>Meet Aurora - Cougar (Puma concolor)</image:title>
<image:caption>Native Habitat: Extensive Geographical Ranges in the Western Hemisphere Average Height: 2- 2.5 feet Average Weight: 115-160 lbs. (males), 75-105 lbs. (females) Wild Diet: Meat (beef, chicken, venison and some beaver/small amounts of pork) Fun Fact: Cougars are known by many names including: puma, mountain lions, ghost cat, and panthers Aurora was born on July 21, 2017 and came to make her home with us from Wildwood Zoo soon after. She quickly became a staff and visitor favorite through her infectious personality and has an unmatched love for all enrichment. Her favorites include cardboard boxes filled with meat, camel hair, sheep wool or llama fiber, generously donated Christmas trees, her boomer ball, and anything else that has been papermached that she can tear down. While they may be large cats, cougars are classified as one of the largest in the “small cat” category. They are one of the “purring” cats which also includes bobcats, ocelots, and lynx meaning that they are capable of purring, but not roaring. These cats vibrate their larynx, which in turn resonates the hyoid bones. These agile cats are capable of jumping 30 feet in distance, 18 ft in height, and reach 50 mph at sprint.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Bears - American Black Bear (Urus americanus)</image:title>
<image:caption>Native Habitat: North America: Alaska east across Canada, most of the US and Northern Mexico Average Height: 2- 3 ft Average Weight: 130-500 lbs (Males), 90-330 lbs (Females) Wild Diet: Omnivores. berries, fruit, insects and grasses. Fish, honeycomb and small mammals also make up a portion of their diet Fun Fact: Lean bears can run in excess of 30 mph! Lavern and Shirley came to the zoo as cubs by the WI DNR in May 2012. Their mother has been illegally killed and were in need of home. The zoo became their permanent home in June of 2012, and they have been educating guests through their fun antics ever since. The girls love to take a dip in their pool and any food related enrichment from fruit filled frozen jello to tossing their big blue containers to release their diet. Black Bears are excellent climbers and capable swimmers. Their life span is approximately 25 years. Females typically give birth every other year and pregnancy lasts around 220 days which includes delayed implantation Mating season peaks in July, with fertilized eggs not implanting until autumn. An average of 2 or 3 nake and blind cubs are then born in January and February and weigh 200 to 450 grams each. They are weaned by 6-8 months, but remain with their mother until about 17 months old (their second winter.)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet Camel - Dromedary Camel (Camelus dromedarius)</image:title>
<image:caption>Native Habitat: Arid regions of the Middle East through Northern India/arid regions of Africa Average Height (at shoulder): 5.9-6.6 feet Average Weight: 880- 1,230 pounds Wild Diet: Herbivores. They eat thorny plants, dry grasses and saltbush. They will eat almost anything that grows in the desert Fun Fact: The camel’s hump is not used to store water, but instead acts as a fat reserve for times of food scarcity. Humphrey was born in May 2001 and made his way to the zoo 3 years later. He has become one of the zoo’s most beloved animals over the years through his friendly demeanor. Humphrey loves seeing visitors every day and especially enjoys standing in the water mist on a day. The Dromedary camel is easily distinguished by its simple hump versus the Bactrian camel of the Gobi desert which has two humps. Camels have numerous adaptations for their desert lifestyle. They have calluses on the chest and legs to protect them from the hot sand when laying down, as well as large, broad feet that are heavily calloused that expand when they step down and contract when lifted to ease walking. Their eyes have a double row of eyelashes to protect them against blowing sand. Their lifespan is 40 years. Camels were domesticated over 4,000 years ago and have become a valuable source of meat, milk and transportation for desert cultures.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet Tiger - Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris)</image:title>
<image:caption>Native Habitat: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Burma. Their habitat varies from grasslands to subtropical rainforests, scrub forests, wet and dry deciduous forests and mangroves Average Length: 7-10 feet Average Weight: 400-570+ lbs (Males) 220-350+ (Females) Wild Diet: Carnivore. These nocturnal hunters’ prey consists of large ungulates including water buffalo, gaur, chital deer, and wild boar Fun Fact: Like human fingerprints, tiger stripes are unique to each tiger. Zuri was born on September 8, 2011 and came to make her home at the zoo on June 12, 2020. She loves water, whether she’s taking a break in her pool or laying with the water stream from the hose while her keepers clean. Her absolute favorite enrichment comes after the holiday season when her pen is filled with Christmas trees from those that have generously donated them. She loves the fresh pine scent, rubbing and rolling on the trees until all the needles come off. Tigers have striped skin, not just fur. White Tigers arise from a recessive variation when two Bengal tigers that carry this recessive gene are bred, producing blue eyes and chocolate colored stripes on white. Bengals are also known as the “Indian Tiger” and is the most common species of tigers. Tigers are considered one of the “roaring” cats which includes lion, leopards, and jaguars. This means that they are able to roar, but not purr. A length of tough cartilage runs up the hyoid bones to the skill preventing the ability to purr, but give the larynx enough flexibility to instead produce a roar. Tigers can take down prey weighing over 2,000 pounds, nearly 4-5x their body weight!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Meet Deer - White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)</image:title>
<image:caption>Native Habitat: Found from southern Canada to South America, white-tailed deer are common in both urban and rural areas as they adapt well to living in close proximity to humans. Being highly adaptable, they utilize creek and river bottoms, forest plantations, croplands, mature forests, young forests, early successional vegetation, and urban areas. They typically prosper following prescribed fire, timber harvest, or other disturbances which produce new vegetative growth near ground level Average Height: 2-3 feet at the shoulder Average Length: 4.5- 6 feet Average Weight: 100-200lbs (males), 80-160lbs (females) Wild Diet: Whitetails eat a variety of hard mast (i.e. acorns, beech nuts), soft mast (i.e. blackberry, blueberry), forbs, tender parts of woody plants, fungi, and agricultural crops. In fall and winter, high priority foods include acorns, along with woody evergreen plants, herbaceous vegetation, and fungi. In the spring and summer, deer eat tender woody browse, a variety of forbs, and soft mast as it becomes available. Adults require 6 - 8lbs. of green food per 100lbs. of body mass daily. Fun Fact: Fawns are occasionally discovered bedded down without their mother- this is perfectly normal. Because they lack the speed and strength to get away from danger, they move very little during their first few weeks. They rely on their lack of scent and spotted coat to camouflage themselves. Mothers distance themselves, except when it is time to nurse, to further protect their fawns by not giving their location away to predators.</image:caption>
